“We kinda just started doing what we wanted to honestly. We went away from our defensive coverage, which we had been practicing and been talking about. I think that was the greatest factor and going away from what we did in the first half. Obviously from what we did in the first half, doing what we were supposed to do and doing it hard” – Connecticut Sun Guard Natisha Hiedeman

SHORT STORY:

Going into the game one team was undefeated and on top of the conference. The other team was looking to get their second win. The Connecticut Sun who to much surprise in a lot of were undefeated coming off a second victory over the Washington Mystics in D.C. The New York Liberty were looking to continue their momentum from their last victory over the Indiana Fever. With the Liberty not having played within six days it seemed rust may have played a part to start the game. The Connecticut Sun took a 14-7 lead to start the game. By the end of the first period the Sun had continued with their grip as they finished with a 23-17 lead.

The Sun continued their aggressive play that gave them the lead into the second period. The Liberty had eventually cut the lead to one 28-27. Connecticut responded right back and went on a 10-5 run near the end of the period. Having a 38-32 lead. Tyasha Hayes led the team with eight. What was more impressive was all three of top Liberty players, (Stewart, Ionescu, and Vandersloot) only had six points. That was due to the play of the Suns defense.

The second half was a different story. The Liberty started the half on a 8-3 run which led to them cutting the lead to 41-40.  By the two minute mark the Liberty had taken a 50-45 lead. As the quarter was ending they were leading 57-51. Vandersloot’s contribution gave them their first lead since the first period, and Stewart who had sixteen points put the stamp on the lead. From that point on the Liberty never looked back as Stewart finished with 21 points. Sabrina Ionescu finished with 17 points and Vandersloot with 18 points.

The Liberty finished with a 81-65 victory over the Sun. The Sun on the other hand were traveling to Atlanta to play the Dream for a much needed win to keep atop the conference, even with the loss they After still on top of the conference and with a win over the Dream, they are still a half a game over the Liberty, stay tuned!
