Bulldogs overcome a 14-point deficit to secure a dramatic victory over the Aggies.
“That is not how we draw them up,” Bryant head football coach Chris Merritt said following his team’s comeback victory over North Carolina A&T.
Both Bryant and North Carolina A&T entered Week 5 of the college football season with confidence, despite having different records and expectations.
For North Carolina A&T, the Aggies were looking to build on the momentum from their upset victory over defending CAA champion Rhode Island. The victory over the Rams was not only an impressive upset but also the Aggies’ first win of the season. With that momentum on their side, North Carolina A&T was hungry for another taste of victory.
Meanwhile, the Bryant Bulldogs entered the matchup with a 3-1 record and an extra week of preparation following their bye week. Before the break, Bryant had defeated Princeton 21-14, extending its winning streak to two games.
Despite having one of the better overall records in the conference, Bryant understood the importance of securing another victory. With conference positioning becoming increasingly important, both teams had plenty to play for.
North Carolina A&T Takes Control Early
North Carolina A&T came out playing tough, physical football and wasted little time establishing its presence.
The Aggies opened the game with an impressive 10-play drive that lasted five and a half minutes. Quarterback Kevin White capped off the drive with a five-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Michael Carlock-Williams, giving North Carolina A&T an early 7-0 lead.
The Aggies continued that momentum on their next scoring drive, but this time they needed significantly less time to find the end zone.
In just four plays and two minutes, White connected with wide receiver Amonte Jones on a 10-yard touchdown pass, extending North Carolina A&T’s lead to 14-0.
Heading into the second quarter, it appeared Bryant could be in for a long afternoon. However, the Bulldogs regrouped and began to find their rhythm offensively.
Bryant responded with a seven-play drive that ended with Jordan Bennett scoring on a 10-yard touchdown run, cutting the deficit to 14-7.
Despite Bryant’s response, North Carolina A&T continued to control the tempo throughout the first half.
The Aggies put together a methodical 13-play drive that consumed much of the remaining time in the second quarter. Although the Bulldogs prevented another touchdown, North Carolina A&T finished the possession with a 23-yard field goal.
The Aggies entered halftime holding a 17-7 advantage.
Defensive Adjustments Slow the Game Down
As the second half began, both teams appeared to make defensive adjustments that slowed the pace of the game.
For Bryant, however, a slower tempo was not necessarily ideal, considering the Bulldogs were still trailing by 10 points.
The third quarter featured just one scoring drive, as North Carolina A&T connected on a 34-yard field goal early in the second half to extend its lead to 20-7.
Through three quarters, the Aggies had controlled much of the game. Their offense was moving the ball effectively, their defense was limiting Bryant’s opportunities, and they were successfully managing the clock.
At that point, North Carolina A&T simply needed to continue executing its game plan to secure its second consecutive victory.
However, Bryant had other plans.
Bryant Begins Its Fourth-Quarter Comeback
Despite trailing by 13 points, the Bulldogs refused to panic.
Instead, Bryant remained patient and committed to its offensive approach. The Bulldogs put together an impressive 19-play drive that lasted approximately nine minutes, eventually finding the end zone to cut North Carolina A&T’s lead to 20-14 early in the fourth quarter.
The touchdown gave Bryant new life, but the Aggies responded with another long, methodical possession.
Although North Carolina A&T’s drive ended with only a field goal, it accomplished something equally important: taking approximately seven minutes off the clock.
The field goal extended the Aggies’ lead to 23-14, putting even more pressure on Bryant to score quickly.
With time becoming a factor, the Bulldogs were forced into a more aggressive offensive approach.
Bryant moved the ball downfield on its next possession, but the drive continued to consume valuable time. Bennett eventually capped off the possession with a one-yard touchdown run, cutting the deficit to 23-21.
With approximately three and a half minutes remaining, Bryant needed one more defensive stop to give its offense an opportunity to complete the comeback.
Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, North Carolina A&T had another big play waiting.
On third down, Bryant suffered a breakdown in coverage, allowing White to connect with Carlock-Williams on a 68-yard touchdown pass.
With only two minutes remaining, the touchdown appeared to be the play that would finally seal the victory for North Carolina A&T.
But the Bulldogs were not finished.
A Dramatic Finish Seals the Victory
With their backs against the wall, Bryant quickly marched down the field once again.
The Bulldogs managed to find the end zone with just 40 seconds remaining, keeping their hopes of a comeback alive.
At that point, Bryant’s only realistic opportunity was to recover an onside kick and give its offense one final possession.
That is exactly what happened.
With 39 seconds remaining, Bryant successfully recovered the onside kick, giving the Bulldogs one last opportunity to complete an improbable comeback.
Quarterback Brennan Meyer wasted little time, completing two quick passes to move Bryant into field goal range.
The Bulldogs then turned to kicker Nicholas Stoyanovich, who delivered under pressure.
Stoyanovich connected on a 25-yard field goal to complete Bryant’s remarkable comeback and secure the victory.
What once appeared to be a comfortable victory for North Carolina A&T had turned into a heartbreaking defeat.
What’s Next for Both Teams?
For North Carolina A&T, the loss was especially difficult considering how much of the game the Aggies had controlled.
Instead of improving to 2-1 in conference play, North Carolina A&T fell to 1-2 in the CAA, with just one victory overall. With conference wins becoming increasingly important, the Aggies will need to find a way to bounce back.
Their next opportunity will come at home against New Hampshire.
For Bryant, the victory represented another important step forward in its season.
The Bulldogs improved to 4-1 overall while remaining undefeated in conference play. More importantly, the comeback demonstrated their ability to remain composed and execute when facing adversity.
Despite their impressive record, the Bulldogs still have work to do in the CAA standings. With undefeated Campbell and Monmouth ahead of them, every conference matchup carries significant weight.
Bryant will look to continue its momentum in its next matchup as the Bulldogs attempt to remain among the conference’s top contenders.
