Black Knights use explosive rushing attack and clock management to overpower the Owls in American Conference showdown.

“That one punt we had during the game was one time too many. The only reason we had to punt was because of a penalty committed by one of the receivers.”

As Week 7 of the college football season arrived, teams across the country entered the second half of their schedules with plenty at stake. For some programs in the American Conference, the focus was simply on building momentum and finishing the season strong. Others were fighting to become bowl-eligible, while contenders such as Florida Atlantic and Army had their sights set on competing for the American Conference Championship in December.

The Florida Atlantic Owls arrived at West Point riding a four-game winning streak, including a conference victory over Navy. Their only loss had come in the season opener against SEC opponent Florida. With momentum on their side, the Owls were looking to continue their impressive run.

Meanwhile, Army was coming off an important victory over Tulane, a win that helped put the Black Knights back into the conference championship conversation. Another victory would strengthen their position among the American Conference’s top contenders.

With both programs looking to establish themselves in the conference standings, the stage was set for an important matchup at West Point.

Army Strikes First, but Florida Atlantic Responds

Anyone familiar with Army football knows that games involving the Black Knights are often physical, competitive battles. However, few could have predicted what would happen on the opening play.

On Florida Atlantic’s first offensive snap, a pass was tipped and intercepted, with Army returning the ball to the 30-yard line. The Black Knights wasted no time capitalizing on the turnover. On the very next play, running back Samari Howard found the end zone, giving Army an early 7-0 lead.

It was the perfect start for the Black Knights. Florida Atlantic, however, quickly demonstrated why its offense had been so successful throughout the season.

Operating at an extremely fast pace, with snaps coming approximately every nine seconds, the Owls responded with an eight-play drive that lasted just two and a half minutes. Quarterback Caden Veltkamp capped off the possession with a 24-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Easton Messer, tying the game at 7-7.

With Florida Atlantic showing its ability to score quickly, Army needed to respond offensively while finding a way to limit the Owls’ opportunities. The Black Knights answered with an explosive play of their own. Quarterback Cale Hellums broke free for a 58-yard touchdown run, putting Army back in front 14-7. But once again, Florida Atlantic had an answer.

Veltkamp connected with wide receiver Kelby Vaslin for another touchdown, tying the game at 14-14. With both offenses finding success early, the game appeared headed toward a high-scoring battle.

Army Takes Control Through Clock Management

During his press conference, Army head coach Jeff Monken acknowledged that the Black Knights understood the challenges presented by Florida Atlantic’s fast-paced offense. The goal was simple: limit the Owls’ possessions and control the tempo of the game. Army began executing that strategy on its next offensive series.

The Black Knights put together a methodical 12-play drive that consumed approximately six minutes and carried into the second quarter. Hellums capped off the possession with a four-yard touchdown run, giving Army a 21-14 lead. The score marked more than just another touchdown. It was the beginning of a dominant stretch for the Black Knights.

On Florida Atlantic’s next possession, the Owls managed to move the ball downfield but were eventually stopped at the Army 32-yard line. Florida Atlantic attempted a field goal into the wind, but the kick was unsuccessful. Army took full advantage of the missed opportunity. The Black Knights responded with another long,
