Rhode Island started Week 1 in the CAA Conference with a dominating performance against Stony Brook. The Rams defeat the Seawolves 35-14.

“ I would like to go out next Saturday and get rid of this loss and I am pretty sure the kids would tell you the same thing”

Stony Brook Football Coach Chuck Priore comments after the 35-14 loss to Rhode Island

The storyline going into Thursday’s game, was that it was CAA Football opening night and one of the two games on slate were the Rhode Island Rams visiting the Stony Brook Seawolves. The Rhode Island Rams who were coming into the season to pick up where they left off at last season with there 7-4 record and even though they missed the playoffs last season, they are looking to come back even stronger, with Kasim Hill at the helm and a defense that compliments what they do on offense. Stony Brook who was hosting the opening night game were looking to start a new era also, as they are looking to have a strong start also, as they ended there season 5-6 and are starting two new quarterbacks this season , but are returning with running back Tyson Lawton.

At the beginning of the game, it was going as expected two teams on opening night playing with speed and discipline, but then at the 10:14 mark of the first quarter, defensive back C. Flowers Lloyd hit quarterback Kasim Hill for a 20 yard fumble return, to give Stony brook a 7-0. Rhode Island responded with a methodical drive with 14 plays 84 yards, lasting seven minutes and twenty three seconds, ending with Hill completing a seven yard touchdown pass to Paul Woods, tying the game 7-7. What begin to seem like the reoccurring theme and problem for Stony Brook, started in the second quarter as Jordan Jones intercepted a pass returning it back to give the Rams a 14-7 lead.

On Stony Brooks next possession, they threw another interception and even though Rhode Island did not score, they took time off the clock and the Seawolves off the field. The Seawolves also did not fold with the two interceptions they had thrown in the quarter, as their defense ended holding the Rams and ending their drives also. They would eventually bounce back at the end of the quarter, in typical Seawolves fashion, methodically down the field, taking time off the clock and Ty Son Lawton running in for the touchdown with 50 seconds left in the quarter. Tying the game at 14, this would eventually be the last the Seawolves would see the end zone.

Rhode Island

As the second half begin, it was looking like a repeat, of the beginning of the first quarter, both teams were playing like it was 0-0 and getting stops on the defensive sides of the ball. The game was looking like it was going to come down to one play and then Rhode Island seemed to take over. Midway through the third quarter, the Rams put together an 11 play 84 yard drive, that resulted in Hill throwing a 32 yard touchdown pass to Ed Lee, putting the Rams up 21-14. Once they took the lead the Rams never looked back as Hill started the fourth quarter with a 10 yard rushing touchdown, that put them up by 14 (28- 14). The defense also assisted with sealing the victory, with the interception, near the end of the game, which resulted in giving the Rams another opportunity to score. Marquis Deshields scored a two yard rushing touchdown with 2 minutes left in the quarter to kill any doubts of a comeback.

The biggest takeaway from this game was Coach Priore decision to start the game with two Quarterbacks, in which he responded “That he thought that both quarterbacks played well, we just did not protect them well enough and that we will evaluate during the bye week moving forward to make a decision”. For the Rhode Island Rams they start off the season 1-0, with a deciding victory over Stony Brook, looking to continue their winning streak next week on the road against Bryant. Stony Brook gets a bye week and gets to reevaluate and reboot from this opening home game defeat, as they travel to UMASS the following week. One thing about Coach Priore, he has been around long enough to bounce back from a loss like this and turn things around, stay tuned!
