POST GAME QUOTES “Finish the season as a champion!” – UAlbany MBB Forward, Justin Neely
Short Story
UAlbany Men’s Basketball team ended 2024 with a win over former in-state rival Stony Brook 77-70. The last time the Great Danes faced Stony Brook was February 26,2022. UAlbany fell to Stony Brook 50-66. Shooting 29% from the field, and 26% from 3P. This game would have a vastly different outcome. It’s much easier to win a game shooting 52% from the field. As well as out scoring your opponent 40-20 in bench points.
Coming off the bench leading the Great Danes to the “promised land” was Justin Neely. The red shirt Junior is playing at an All-Conference level. Scoring 16 PTS, and 9 REBS in victory. Neely resurgence in the paint is a plus for the Great Danes. In the previous two seasons Justin battled with injury, rarely seeing the floor. With a healthy Neely the sky’s the limit. The Miami native also had 3 assists on the evening showing his ability to playmake.
Kacper Klaczek, and Sultan Adewale were responsible for dragging the SeaWolves to the deep end of the Hudson River. Keeping Stony Brook in unfamiliar terrain. Sultan would go 4-4 FG on the night and provide a “bullying” presence. Kacper would be the finishing combination to Neely punches.
Like any good basketball game this one was filled with highs and lows. Just when you thought UAlbany would run away with a 30 point victory Stony Brook would make subtle adjustments in their defense. While the Seawolves would go on a 8-2 run to close the 1st half, Freshman Zach Matulu would step up big. Splashing a corner 3.
There were many variables in the Great Danes success over Stony Brook. One would be Amar’e Marshall. UAlbany’s “Ace of Spades”. On the wing he is a versatile 3 level scorer. His scoring was on display at the Broadview center. Marshall shot over 50% on the night. Although not one if his most complete games the Junior Guard impact was felt.

The last key to the Great Danes win over Stony Brook was coaching. Coach Killings, and his coaching staff where playing 3D underwater chess with the Seawolves. Using there depth to their advantage Coach Killing’s rotations were flawless on the night.
