SHORT STORY: As the saying goes adversity builds character. UAlbany MBB has faced it’s fair share of adversity this season. Coming into conference play 0-2. Riddled with injuries The Great Danes had two options. One hang their heads, or two reach deep down and play with some pride. UAlbany chose the second option. Not only did they play with pride they also are starting to build a defensive identity. Now the story for this game is obvious the Great Danes shot a blazing hot 65% from three. What is more interesting is to see is the discipline on defense. Something that will not show up on the stat sheet is Coach Dwayne Killings subbing in Japannah Kellogg in certain rotations at the 4 spot.
This is was an underrated move defensively. At 6’8, with a 40 inch vertical Jappanah gives UAlbany an athletic edge at the PF position that wont always show up on the stat sheet. These defensive rotations allowed a long UAlbany team to speed up UMass Lowell. Forcing the River Hawks to take many uncharacteristic shots in the second half. Offensively the Danes were clicking on all cylinders. In UAlbany’s post game presser Head Coach Dwayne Killings talked about the synergy amongst players on his team. Sarju Patel, Aaron Reddish, and Gerald Drumgoole Jr all scored over 20 points. Freshman, Jonathan Beagle continues to impose his will in the paint. The Great Danes center finished with another double double, scoring 17 points, and 12 rebounds. The message was clear the season is not over yet, and the Great Danes still have a lot of fight left in them.
POST GAME QUOTES: What you saw in that position is what two guys will do for four years here, win a lot of games, and a lot of championships.
