Friday nights big game with the Chicago Sky, and Connecticut Sun had big hype. Even though the season had just resumed a week ago this game already had big implications for both teams. As the Sky were looking to rebound from their loss to the Phoenix Mercury on Sunday 86-68. Another reason this was a big game for the Sky was they were sitting in the eighth spot for the playoffs.
The Connecticut Sun on the other hand were coming off a hard fought victory over the LA Sparks 69-61, and even though they won they were still four games back behind the first place Liberty. Once this game started the Sky came out hot and started on a 4-0 run, but the Sun started to respond quickly. By midway through the first were only trailing by two (8-6). The Sun continued to make it a back and forth battle/match up as they ended tying the game by the end of the first (17-17).
The Sun charge was led mostly by the former Sky player Marina Mabrey. Who was recently traded ended the first period with seven. Surprisingly the game being tied was not a shock, what was a shock was that the Sun held Angel Reese scoreless for the period. When the second period started the Sun picked up right where they left off. Mabrey hit a three point shot to give the Sun a three point lead and immediately coach Weatherspoon calls a timeout.
This would not do much as the Sun continued to increase there lead throughout the rest of the period. Despite Chennedy Carters efforts leading the team with 13 the Suns defense was to much for the Sky. As they got stops, created turnovers, and most surprisingly holding forward Angel Reese scoreless for the first half. When play resumed for the second half the Sky cut the lead from ten to six. Angel Reese scored her first two points of the game at the 8:37 mark forcing the Sun to call a timeout.
After the timeout, the Sky picked up right where they left off at. As they cut the lead to four, and then the next two possessions they tied the game at 50. By the end of the period the Sun had taken the lead 64-63. The defense from the Sky, and Reese nine points was the major reason for this turnaround. Even though they had the lead it was only by one and the Sun were not going away either. even though they gave up the lead. One of the major reasons they were in the game was former Sky player Marina Mabrey was lighting it up as she led the team with 19.
The fourth quarter seemed like a replay of the third. As Chicago ended up taking the momentum and building a six point lead. The Sun would eventually go on their run cutting the Sky lead to one (74-73) midway through the third period. Forcing the Sky to call a timeout. As it seemed the game went down to the wire with every shot counting.
It was Alyssa Thomas two free throws at the end of the period that got the Sun victory at the end. Marina Mabrey finished the game with a team leading 24 points. For the Sky aside from this being a painful last minute loss to the Sun it also hurt them standing wise.
The Sky had lost there third straight, to another playoff bound team the Las Vegas Aces in similar fashion. The only reason they are still holding on to the number eight seed, is because the Dream who are trailing them by one game lost there last two straight. The Sun on the other hand are now only trailing the number one seed NY Liberty by three games, after not only there tough victory over the Sky but then going into the Barclays/Brooklyn the next night and beating them 72-64.
