For Saturday’s game it was a match up between two teams that was in much need of a win. NJIT has had a tough January. They are 2-4 overall for the month, and having lost three of their last four games. Most recently to Vermont 68-64. For the Highlanders this was not only a must win game but, they also were a team with nothing to lose. As they sit at the bottom of the conference with 1-4 record in the conference and 4-16 overall.
For UAlbany, the Great Danes were also having a rough month as well. They were 2-4 and like NJIT they also lost three of their last four. The Great Danes were looking to redeem themselves, and get back on the court after their most recent loss to UMBC in overtime. They are also trying to get back to .500 overall with a win.
Once the game started it seemed Albany was setting the tone. They started off on a 6-0 run, and held NJIT scoreless until the 15:27 mark of the game. Forcing the Highlanders to call a timeout, and regroup. Regrouping is what the Highlanders did. NJIT ended up scoring five straight to take a 7-6 lead.

NJIT turned around this game behind the play of Tariq Francis, and the play of their defense. Which held the Great Danes offense scoreless for almost three minutes. Two things that stood out about NJIT lead was the fact they had a lead, but also the Highlanders didn’t score from 3 point range.
UAlbany took back the lead around the 4:35 mark forcing the Highlanders to call a timeout. When play resumed the Great Danes played more intense on defense. Making another 6-0 run before NJIT finally scored, giving them a 28-22 lead. Albany finished the half with a 30-26 lead.

Even though the Great Danes had the lead, they could not have felt comfortable. NJIT was killing them in the paint, NJIT leading player Tariq Francis had 10 points, and did not look like he was going to slow down at all. The only thing keeping the Great Danes on top was the Highlanders dismal three point shooting. They only made one three pointer for the whole half.
Once play resumed for the second half Albany kept a stranglehold on the lead. Increasing their lead by nine (41-32), behind Amare Marshall two three point shots. NJIT called a timeout to regroup and they did. When the timeout was over the Highlanders cut the lead from nine to four (43-39) with play once again from Francis. Who now had 20 points, and they were just getting started.

When play resumed NJIT cut the lead to two, and then tied the game at the 10:40 mark. This was starting to look like a replay of the UMBC game from Thursday night. With 6:57 left the Great Danes raised their level of play. Taking back the lead 50-49 behind Amir Lindsay’s three point shot.
From that point, UAlbany never looked back as they increased their lead to five., Lindsay was making tough shots to help with them keeping the tight lid on the lead. What was also the deciding factor was NJIT’s horrible shooting from inside the paint. Which was a result of the defense the Great Danes were playing. Marshall had a key block at the end of the game. Followed by Demarr Langford steal, and Bryan Joshua free throws to put the game away. With the win, the Great Danes improve to 3-4 in the conference and .500 overall (11-11), and a bye for Thursday. NJIT falls to 1-5 and last place in the conference and 4-17 overall.
