For Week 8 of the CAA football season, the Rhode Island Rams came into the game looking to pick up where they left off. Even though Rhode Island entered with a 5-2 record, they had lost two of their last three games, with their most recent win coming against New Hampshire, 38–27. The Rams definitely needed this game — not only to remain atop the conference, where they were still undefeated, but also to keep their playoff hopes strong and alive.

UAlbany, on the other hand, was in desperate need of a win. The Great Danes came into the matchup on a two-game losing streak and sat at the bottom of the conference with a 1-5 record — with nothing to lose.

At first, the game looked like it might be competitive. UAlbany went three-and-out on its first drive, but the Rams marched down the field before being stopped by the Great Danes’ defense deep in their territory, settling for a field goal (3–0). That was the only point of the game that felt close. After that, it became the Rhode Island show.

On the next drive, while UAlbany was moving the ball, quarterback Jack Field’s pass was tipped and intercepted. Rhode Island capitalized, putting together an 11-play drive that took four minutes off the clock to give them a 10–0 lead. Albany responded with a methodical drive of its own but could only manage a field goal (10–3). After that, the Rams completely took control — both offensively and defensively.

The Rhode Island defense produced multiple three-and-outs in the second quarter, forced another interception, and relentlessly pressured the quarterback. The offense was just as dominant. Quarterback Devin Farrell connected with wide receiver Greg Gaines III for a 32-yard touchdown, then hit Gaines again on the next possession for a 42-yard score, giving Rhode Island a 24–3 lead.

With little time left in the half, it looked like the Rams might run out of time to score again — but they didn’t. They struck once more on a quick drive, heading into halftime up 31–3.

Once play resumed, Rhode Island picked up right where they left off. On their first possession of the second half, the Rams put together another 11-play drive that chewed nearly six minutes off the clock, capped by Farrell connecting with tight end Conor Finner for a 5-yard touchdown to extend the lead to 38–3.

Down by 35, the Great Danes showed some fight in the third quarter, scoring on back-to-back possessions to cut the lead to 38–17. But after that, Rhode Island slammed the door shut. As wide receiver Greg Gaines stated in the postgame, “We feed off the defense, and the defense feeds off us” — and that’s exactly what happened in the fourth quarter.

The Rams scored 20 more points and held UAlbany scoreless the rest of the way, sealing a dominant 58–17 victory.

For Rhode Island, now sitting at 6–2, this was a crucial win to keep them atop the CAA standings, with Monmouth trailing close behind at 3–0 in conference play and 6–1 overall. For the Great Danes, it was their third straight loss — another tough chapter in an already difficult season.

It doesn’t get any easier for either team next week. Rhode Island faces in-state rival Bryant, a team that sits near the bottom of the standings at 2–5 but always plays the Rams tough. Meanwhile, UAlbany will look to hit the reset button and finish the season strong — starting with a road matchup against one of the conference’s top teams, Villanova. Stay tuned!
