I knew this football team would take time to come together and we are still coming together, there is a a lot of new players, we are gaining a lot of new confidence , that is why it was important to kick in the door and get this first win.
– UALBANY Head Coach Greg Gattuso
Going into Saturday’s game CCSU was coming off a tough loss to SE Louisana 70-6, and was looking to rebound from last weeks blowout. The Blue Devils were also looking to snap a three game losing streak. UAlbany also was coming in, looking to rebound from their tough loss to Fordham. The Great Danes blew an 11 point lead going into the fourth quarter. As the game started the Great Danes set the tone. Running back Todd Sibley ran for 97 yards to score the first touchdown of the game. CCSU responded with their own drive. Methodically moving down the field with a 13 play 69 yard drive that took seven minutes and thirty three seconds.

The drive ended with running back Nasir Smith scoring on a four yard drive. The game would have been tied however the extra point was missed, which had them trailing 7-6. UAlbany came back and responded with another quick strike. Within two minutes, with backup quarterback Joey Carino ending the drive with a four yard run.

The Great Danes followed that drive up with John Opalko, kicking a 29 yard field goal. The game was starting to look like UAlbany was going to pull away. Then CCSU responded on the next drive, with Shon Mitchell hitting Erik Surratt, with a 17 yard touchdown pass (17-12). Even though they did not succeed with the two point conversion, they once again succeeded with a score. Cutting the lead and methodically move down the field, taking seven minutes and twenty seconds off the clock. UAlbany countered that drive with a five minute plus drive. Resulting in backup quarterback Joey Carino, scoring on a two yard touchdown run, to end the the first half.

After Carino’s touchdown run to end the half the Great Danes never looked back. Going into the third quarter with a 24-12 lead. The third quarter is when UAlbany put the nail in the coffin. On CCSU first drive of the half Joseph Greany picked up a fumble recovery and ran it back for a touchdown. A 77 yards run, making it a 31-12 lead. Thomas Greany picked up where he left off scoring two touchdown in third quarter alone. Even though CCSU did not quit and scored two more times, the deficit was too great to come back from. One play that stood out was in the third quarter. CCSU attempted to try a flea flicker and failed. This resulted in a UAlbany touchdown.

As coach McCarthy stated this play is going to help us get a touchdown or be a disaster. It was a disaster as they lost 45-26. CCSU now 0-4 and will face Brown next week. As coach also stated is still upbeat and would be a major mistake to pack it in. As he says these type of situations is what makes coaching fun! UAlbany on the other hand have a bye week. Todd Sibley stated he prefers to play next week and keep the momentum going from this victory. He may be right, he may be wrong, only time will tell, stay tuned!
