“Being down five guys, it is what it is. Being down five guys doesn’t mean you miss layups or let guys drive by you. It has nothing to do with who is missing, so we have to get better,” Binghamton Men’s Basketball coach Lavell Sanders said during his post game comments following Saturday’s loss to Lemoyne.
For the second game of the day, the battle of the interstate saw Le Moyne take on Binghamton. Le Moyne entered the match up with several goals: reclaiming the interstate title they lost to Binghamton on their home court last season (72-62) and bouncing back from a recent loss to Ball State, which had snapped a two-game winning streak.
Binghamton, meanwhile, looked to continue the momentum from their overtime victory over Lehigh (80-71), which had snapped their own two-game losing streak.
From the tip, Le Moyne came out hot, opening a 10-0 run led by Jakob Blakely, who scored five points. Binghamton struggled early, shooting 0-for-5 and forcing a timeout from the Bearcats. After the break, Binghamton adjusted and responded with a 10-5 run, cutting the Dolphins’ lead to nine (19-10).
What initially appeared to be a blowout began to shift, as the Bearcats closed the gap to six by the 7:48 mark (23-17) and further down to five with just four and a half minutes remaining in the first half (26-21). Le Moyne weathered the Bearcats’ storm, rebuilding their lead to 10 (31-21) and entering halftime with a 12-point advantage (37-25).
The second half saw both teams come out swinging. Jackson Benigni hit a three-pointer to reduce the lead to nine, but Le Moyne quickly responded. Guard Shilo Jackson scored on the Dolphins’ next two possessions, giving Lemoyne a 13-point cushion (41-28). Binghamton rallied again, with Benigni leading a charge that cut the deficit to seven (45-38) before a media timeout.
After the break, Le Moyne regained control. The Dolphins expanded their lead from eight to 14, and eventually to 18 points with five minutes remaining (71-53). Le Moyne finished the game with a 15-point victory, claiming the interstate trophy and seeing three players score in double figures.
The win was significant not only because it came against a regional rival but also because it brought Le Moyne back to .500 ahead of a much-needed rest and a ten-day stretch before facing Texas.
For Binghamton, the loss dropped their record to 3-7, keeping them in the crowded middle of their conference standings. The team was without five players due to injury, but as Coach Sanders emphasized in the post Game press conference, “there are no excuses — there is nothing else to do but figure it out.”
