In Week 10 of the college football season, the Connecticut Huskies and the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) entered the matchup from two very different perspectives.
UAB came into the game looking to build on the momentum from their surprise upset victory over the No. 22-ranked Memphis Tigers—a win that marked interim head coach Alex Mortensen’s first since taking over after the departure of Trent Dilfer.
Meanwhile, UConn was looking to rebound from a heartbreaking 37–34 double-overtime loss to Rice the previous week. That defeat not only came in dramatic fashion but also snapped the Huskies’ four-game winning streak.
First Half: UConn Dominates Early
Teams that pull off major upsets like UAB did often struggle the following week—and that seemed to be the case here. The Blazers’ offense could not find any rhythm during the first half, producing multiple three-and-outs. Starting quarterback Jalen Kitna completed only two passes and threw one interception before halftime.

UAB’s best early scoring opportunity came when they drove deep into UConn territory, but Kitna’s pass was intercepted in the red zone by UConn defensive back Cam Chadwick, ending the drive. Later, as the half wound down, UAB again reached the red zone. Instead of settling for a field goal, the Blazers went for it on fourth down and failed to convert, heading into halftime scoreless.
UConn’s offense, however, came out firing. On their opening drive, the Huskies marched down to the 21-yard line but failed to convert on fourth down. That would be their last missed opportunity for a while—because over their next five possessions, UConn scored on each one.
Their first scoring drive covered 83 yards in nine plays, capped off by quarterback Joe Fagnano’s 26-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Skyler Bell. On the next possession, the Huskies put together a 10-play, 67-yard drive, finishing with running back Cam Edwards’ one-yard touchdown run.

By late in the second quarter, UConn struck again—this time in just three plays—to extend their lead to 24–0 at halftime.
Second Half: UAB Tries to Rally, But UConn Seals It
The Blazers opened the second half with an aggressive approach, again going for it on fourth down, but came up short. UConn quickly capitalized, as Fagnano connected with tight end Juice Vernan for a six-yard touchdown to make it 31–0.
At that point, the game was essentially out of reach—but UAB didn’t quit. Quarterback Ryder Burton took advantage of a blown coverage, finding Brian Hawkins for a 68-yard touchdown to put UAB on the board.
The Blazers showed more life late, with Hawkins adding a 32-yard run and Burton connecting with Kaleb Brown for another touchdown. However, it was too little, too late. UConn closed out a convincing 38–19 victory.
