The Huskies came into the game looking to pick up where they left off last week. UConn pulled out a tough 20–17 win against Buffalo — their second straight victory — improving their record to 3-2. Florida International entered the matchup looking to rebound from last week’s loss to Delaware, a team that UConn had also lost to in overtime (44–41). The Panthers weren’t just looking for a win, but also hoping to get back above .500 as they sat at 2-2.
From the start, the Huskies set the tone with physical play on defense and sharp execution on offense. UConn held Florida International to three straight three-and-outs in the first quarter and forced two turnovers in the second. The Panthers didn’t sustain a drive past three plays until the second quarter and didn’t score until the 6:05 mark.
Offensively, the Huskies had the opposite experience. On their opening drive, UConn methodically marched down the field on an 11-play, 69-yard drive that took five minutes and ended with quarterback Joe Fagnano completing an 18-yard touchdown pass to Skyler Bell, giving the Huskies a 7–0 lead. On their next scoring drive, they struck even faster — four plays in just over a minute — capped off by a one-yard touchdown run from Cam Edwards to make it 14–0.
The second quarter was all UConn. The Huskies added two field goals and another quick-strike touchdown — a 61-yard bomb from Fagnano to receiver Reymello Murphy Jr. that took just 30 seconds. By halftime, UConn had built a commanding 27–3 lead, and they weren’t done yet.
In the second half, the Huskies continued their dominance. Early in the third quarter, Fagnano connected with running back Victor Rosa for a 65-yard touchdown that took only one minute and 36 seconds. On their next possession, Fagnano found Skyler Bell again for an eight-yard touchdown, extending the lead to 44–3. UConn didn’t let up, adding another score in the fourth quarter to make it 51–3.
Defensively, the Huskies were just as impressive, holding FIU scoreless throughout the third quarter and forcing multiple three-and-outs. The Panthers didn’t find the end zone until the 5:46 mark of the fourth quarter, making the final score 51–10.
After the game, Coach Jim Mora was celebrated for earning the 100th win of his career. He was congratulated on the stadium video board by several notable figures, including Charles Barkley, Peyton Manning, and Dan Quinn. During the postgame press conference, Mora was both humble and reflective, expressing gratitude for the milestone while looking forward to more victories ahead.
For the Huskies, this win was crucial — not only because it pushed them to 4–2, but also because they head into their bye week on a high note before facing a tougher second-half schedule. The remainder of their season includes two ACC opponents (Boston College and Duke) and three AAC matchups (UAB, Rice, and Florida Atlantic). With a three-game winning streak and a 4–2 record — which could easily have been 6–0 if not for close losses to Syracuse and Delaware — UConn is trending upward.
For Florida International, the bye week comes at the right time after a tough loss to the Huskies. Now sitting at 2–3 and ninth in the conference, the Panthers will need to regroup quickly as they prepare for a Tuesday night showdown against conference leader Western Kentucky.
